When my son was three years old, Dan introduced him to “Bobby Dylan,” demonstrated how to properly grind coffee by hand, and modeled unbridled confidence and zeal. I’m fairly certain some of Dan’s confidence rubbed off on this child as he exhibits a similar dogged pursuit of his aims.
Nearly once a week, I walk my son to the corner of Harrison Avenue & Cushing Street to get lunch at The Park Side Cafe. We eat under the pavilion, get a book from the free library, and exchange art at the Tiny Gallery. I know the battle that took place to prevent this precious community space from becoming another gas station that wasn’t needed. I understand the role that Dan & Bethany played in organizing this mighty effort. And I am keenly aware of the loss to the neighborhood if they hadn’t persevered.
I also learned how deep, community bonds make this neighborhood what it is today. This lesson stays in my mind as I’m part of a new wave of young neighbors moving in and planting roots here. To borrow the phrase from Myles Horton, “we make the road by walking.” If Dan taught me anything it was to not delay and start walking… with as many people as will join.
