Tributes to Dan Leahy

An organizer organizes.

And a good one creates more organizers.

Dan Leahy worked with thousands of people over his many decades of work. He taught many of us, organized most of us, and hired some of us (all at the downtown Olympia bar Ben Moore’s, apparently), and shared insights with all of us.

We invited people to share “Shit Dan Leahy Taught Us” based on a class designed by one of Dan’s colleagues, Anthony Zaragoza, called “Shit You Should Know.”

Anthony published many of the talks in 2022, including one by Dan on “Rules for Challenging Illegitimate Authority.” Here is a video of Dan giving this talk to Anthony’s class

These tributes from neighbors, former students, organizers, educators, and friends reflect lessons learned and a legacy that echoes in our lives.

Dan inspired all of us, and we continue to work in memory of his leadership.

Washington Council of Firefighters

Dan was the keynote speaker for the Washington Council of Firefighters in 2002. He spoke the morning of September 10. Dan was a true friend and a force for intelligence and progress. We miss him dearly. Watch Dan's keynote address here. —Helen Kramer and Mike...

When Dan was the Director of Cornell's Human Affairs Program (HAP), I was a graduate student in Cornell's Department of City and Regional Planning. I met Dan at a party he gave for his friends and colleagues, including one of my professors, Cary Hershey. Cary had...

Shit I learned from Dan! I am still expecting an email: Pling “Hi Breki, a friend / neighbour / colleague / former student is stopping over in Iceland. I think you should meet?” And an adventure ensues, because how can a friend of Dan’s not be your friend? Do shit...

Very sorry to hear of Dan's passing, so sad for everyone. He was such a pleasant man and had such an interest in life and people, enjoyed many talks with him when he was around Kinsale and also over zoom. He was also kind enough to offer accommodation to my two sons...

Larry Kuehn

It is hard to believe that such a vital force as Dan is gone. I'm not surprised to hear that he was engaged right up to the end. I was thinking of Dan today as I was reading the latest issue of the BCTF magazine and there was an article about the Tri-national...

Michael Huntsberger

Dan was a great friend, neighbor, colleague and mentor. When our house across the street was being painted, he and Bethany offered their own as an essential refuge. On a warm summer night he taught us the exuberant joys of nightball. His boys spent hours playing in...

Take risks, fearlessly. Make no excuses and admit nothing. Read more. Fight the system, do it with intention and your heart. Celebrate all the victories, celebrate the moment, share stories. With all my love and gratitude, thank you for teaching me this shit and so,...

Jennifer Dowd Edmondson

Me and Dan I spent a key period of my youth "helping" Dan and my mom, Jinx Dowd, doing office chores for the Human Affairs Program. Mostly my help was the sort that involves things like walking around and around a long table collating the Organizers Notebook, but...

I learned how damn nice it is to be with, listen to, talk to laugh with, hang out with, dialog with, travel with, drink with, watch with, mingle with, dine with, witness and march with Dan Leahy almost from the moment he walked into Barbara and Marc’s house in DC and...

When my son was three years old, Dan introduced him to “Bobby Dylan,” demonstrated how to properly grind coffee by hand, and modeled unbridled confidence and zeal. I’m fairly certain some of Dan’s confidence rubbed off on this child as he exhibits a similar dogged...

I won't say Dan saved my life, but he MADE my life. I worked with Dan at the Labor Education & Research Center -- yes, paid with money to do shit, but I was compensated so richly in other ways. Dan gave me his family; he gave me his home; he gave me his friends; he...

Shit Dan Leahy taught me. Though this may shock those who know Dan through what we call his professional life, through my early life and teen years, Dad wasn't really one for explicit life lessons. Exceptions being the Rules, of course, and, later, once, "when someone...

Dan Leahy taught me what it looks like to drive fearlessly and competently through a thick blizzard of a snow storm one Thanksgiving when we made our way from Boston to Marathon, NY to visit Maryrose and Donn. It also happened to be the first time I met Bethany and...

Shit my dad taught me If you feel like driving fast, don't do it in the neighborhood. Actually, for that matter, the coolest way to drive through your own space is between 8 and 13 miles an hour. Leave driving fast for the mountains, but pass on the uphills, not the...

Things I have learned from Dan Leahy Keep in touch with people. If you don’t write your own story, someone else will write it for you. Make sure you know what you are saying (particularly if you are protesting in another language). Take time to do the research—and...

I have known Dan Leahy since my arrival in Olympia, 35 years ago. He has been a good friend, a wise and caring person whose advice and reflections I seek out. We taught political economy together at Evergreen on five different occasions, both to undergraduates and in...

What to say about one's neighbor of 36 years! We're Dan and Bethany's neighbors to the East and about the same age - a bit older. We had our children sooner so we were about a decade ahead in school activities: piano and band recitals, sports, academic events and...

Included in the list of shit I learned from Dan is the tool/rule about reading source documents. Read them, then read them against what's being written and said about them. Then help others do the same. Create a chart. Make it plain. Dan taught this in his classes and...

Remembering Dan Leahy: October 6, 1943 – December 10, 2022 Dan Leahy was my former professor, mentor, and friend. The truth is, if you were his friend, you were family to him. We met when I was a student in his freshman seminar in 1997. I was a shy girl hoping to make...

There are so many lessons I could list, including his insistence on lists. But I will focus on just one. Dan is committed to continuous learning and brings a rigorous spirit of inquiry to the world. It was telling that in his roster of recommended top 25 books, he...

Dan taught me THIS. What you are doing with this shout-out email to gather learnings from him. Call it organizing? Spurring into action? Following up? All of the above, possibly. My guess is that If you are doing it, it's because of a seed that Dan planted in you, and...

Dan Leahy: What he taught me In 1987, I worked with Dan to put on an organizing school for trade union women. At one of the early events, I taught some classes to the participants on math and using computers. At the closing ceremonies of the event, Dan thanked the...

I have known Dan for 52 years; we were students at NYU. Both of us were returned Peace Corps volunteers.  The Dan Leahy of today differs little from the man I met in grad school; wiser, more experienced and weathered but essentially he is what he was then. By that I...

The art of walking Sometime after arriving at Evergreen in 2005, as green as green can be, I called Dan from a landline in a rental that was far more grown up than I was. I asked him what Evergreen students wanted. “They want to do things,” he said. “They want to...
