I won’t say Dan saved my life, but he MADE my life. I worked with Dan at the Labor Education & Research Center — yes, paid with money to do shit, but I was compensated so richly in other ways. Dan gave me his family; he gave me his home; he gave me his friends; he gave me some of the best experiences of my life.

One of the great things I learned from Dan is to find a place to rent on a beach. Bring your family, bring your friends. Organize and execute a ritual celebrating the place and your shared experience. Repeat.

Whether on a windy beach in Grayland, Washington or a sunny out of the way beach in Jalisco, Mexico, the time I spent on the water with Dan and a delightful band of ruffians is a permanent source of giddy joy for me.

Thanks, Dan — I love you to pieces.
